Your Guide to a Snowy Adventure: Visiting the Mountains from Canberra

The crisp mountain air, the slopes dusted with fresh powder, the thrill of carving your way down - the Snowy Mountains are calling, and June marks the exciting season opening! Whether you're a seasoned skier or a curious first-timer, get ready for an unforgettable winter adventure.

Our Recommendations for Travelling to the Snow:

One day bus service to the snow available through Ozia Tours.

  • 7 hours free time at Thredbo or Perisher, $105 per adult / $99 per child (equipment and lift pass not included)

Multi day snow packages available through OzSnow (Stay at Canberra Central Parklands either side of your trip).

  • 2, 3 and 6 day packages available at Perisher, Thredbo and Jyndabine (starting from $379 per person)

Rent a car and enjoy the scenic drive down to the mountains.

  • The Snowy Mountains are located 2.5 hours from Canberra and if catching the bus isn't for you, we'd recommend renting a car in Canberra. Travel via the Monaro Hwy and Kosciuszko Rd to make your way towards Perisher or Thredbo, and don't forget to carry snow chains (must be carried by all 2WD vehicales) and a Kosciuszko National Park pass.

Take a short trip to Corin Forest for a first time snow experience.

  • Corin Forest, located just 45 minutes southwest of Canberra, is a year-round alpine destination offering a great day of family fun. We'd recommend visiting if you have kids that would enjoy playing in the snow, learning to ski/snowboard, or racing down the alpine slide.

Beyond the Slopes: A Winter Wonderland Awaits

The Snowy Mountains offer more than just skiing and snowboarding. Here's a taste of what you can experience:

  • Spectacular Scenery: Witness a breathtaking transformation as the mountains turn into a winter wonderland. Hike through snow-covered trails, take in panoramic views, or simply revel in the beauty of a frosted landscape.
  • Thrilling Activities: Go snow tubing for a rush of adrenaline, or try your hand at cross-country skiing for a serene exploration.
  • Cozy Evenings: Curl up by a crackling fireplace with a mug of hot cocoa, or indulge in delicious meals at the many restaurants and cafes.
  • Peak Festival: Celebrate the season kick-off with the Peak Festival at Perisher. Enjoy live music, vibrant atmosphere, and a taste of the Snowy Mountains spirit.
